When I went out drinking, I was drinking properly now, too. It wasn’t a few beers or the odd pint of Guinness any more. It was shots of vodka. Mixing all these pills with alcohol was obviously a stupid combination. I drank to get drunk. I took pills to get high. I took downers to down myself out. All day long, it was constant. Anything to stop me having time just looking at myself, realizing what a mess I was making of my life.

There were a few things which had started me off on this destructive course. I wasn’t very happy in America. In fact I was very homesick. It hit me when I went back to England for that Christmas in 1994. I had friends in America and got on well with most of the people I met there but I missed Blackpool; I missed all my old mates and I missed the English sense of humour. You can have a laugh over here but it’s not the same humour I grew up with. When I watch TV over here I usually stick with the History Channel and animal programmes—the comedies leave me cold.
